The Gallery – self-portrait

An English Mamma in Stockholm: sunglasses self portrait photo gallery

I let very few pictures of me pass, mostly because I am the official photographer of the house, so I get to delete them ones I dislike in the editing process, but also because I am the official photographer of the house and so I’m rarely at the other end of the lens. (Seriously, Husband has many, many skills but taking decent photos is not one of them – the DSLR and him is a disastrous combination.)

Something happens when I put on sunglasses though. Maybe it is the summery feeling that I get, maybe it is that they hide the bags under my eyes and cover up half of my face; whatever it is, photos of me in sunglasses get allowed nine times out of ten.

And it looks as if Little O is following in my footsteps (and he even managed to get them on the right way up this time!).

The Gallery: Expressions

Baby E has a couple of different facial expressions that just make me smile so much: tongue out in concentration and scepticism, mostly when presented with some new food.

These two are perfect examples of these expressions and fit so well into the Gallery theme for this week.

I think that in about 80% of the photos I have taken of Baby E he has his tongue out. But I am pleased that I finally managed to capture his sceptical look at last.

The Gallery: Together

An English Mamma in Stockholm: boys on pulka sledge snow

Now that Baby E is 14 months old and Little O is almost three, the boys have really started to interact with one another and can even “play” together for short periods. There are hugs and kisses, punctuated with the occasional shove, and Little O is becoming increasingly protective of his little brother. Yes, sometime his cuddles are a little too hard and knock Baby E to the floor, but on the whole they get on well these days.

It is amazing to watch, especially for me having grown up as an only child. I don’t know how long this phase will last, until they reach ages that aren’t so compatible, so I am just going to enjoy this togetherness while it lasts.

The Gallery – books

This week’s Gallery prompt is one close to my heart: books. I love books and reading and have done since I was small. I would love to post a photo of our bookshelves, stacked with all the books that Husband and I own, but unfortunately, we are still not finished with the apartment renovation, so all the lovely books remain in storage.

Happily though, while searching for the boys’ winter things yesterday, Husband did bring up a box with my “To read” pile from the bedside table. I liberated three books from it quickly, before he saw, and they will be added to my new pile of books beside the bed that I want to read.

It feels so good to have found these. They’ve been hiding in their box since the spring, so I had forgotten about their existence, but now I am going to get reading!

The Gallery: Planes, trains and automobiles

One of our trips out this week fitted in perfectly with Tara’s Gallery theme for the week: planes, trains and automobiles. I would like to be able to say that we took a taxi to the station, a train to the airport and hopped on a plane to somewhere tropical, sunny and exotic. Unfortunately, Little O, Baby E and I just hopped on a bus and crossed a small amount of water to go to the Stockholm Transport Museum (Spårvägsmuseet) on Södermalm.

We ended up staying more than four hours as Little O just loved the place. So much so that I went directly to the entrance desk afterwards and bought an annual ticket as I suspect that we’ll be making more visits there, especially on days when the weather is a little iffy.

The place is great: it has buses, trams and trains from the last 19th century right up to a replica of the tram put into service in the city in 2010 and you can climb onboard around half of them. They also have some different interactive bits and pieces (pretend to drive a bus or train, dress up as a conductor etc) and Little O’s favourite part, a large model train set to play on. Plus, for 10kr you can take a ride on the mini train that goes around the museum.

I definitely think we’ll be going back!

The Gallery – Picture postcard

Picture postcard Phuket

This week’s Gallery theme is “picture postcard” and when I read it, I just knew that this picture would be perfect. I took it last January when Husband, Little O and I were on holiday on Phuket. We had a fantastic time on the holiday. Little O was just beginning to use furniture to pull himself up to standing and was trying to crawl. He spent every day in the pool and demolished a fair few Thai meals.

I would go back at the drop of a hat.

The Gallery: Light

Taken at Torekov, November 2007

I took this picture in November 2007, shortly before Husband and I moved to Sweden.

Three of us – two close friends from Copenhagen and I – went for a few days to stay at Torekov Hotell in southern Sweden to relax, enjoy some spa treatments and have a few laughs.

Sadly, just over a year after this picture was taken, and three years ago this week, one of these wonderful, kind-hearted girls died from cancer, just a few months after giving birth to her first child. She remains in our thoughts and our hearts.

The Gallery – Me Right Now

So, I saw Tara’s prompt for The Gallery pretty early on (in fact, in the early hours of the morning) and got on with taking my photo entry immediately (but am cutting it pretty fine to add the post to her site!). The week’s prompt was: me right now. Tara wanted us to take a picture of ourselves at the time when we read what the prompt was. For me, this meant taking a picture at god knows what o’clock as I was feeding Baby E.

So, here’s my entry for this week’s Gallery:
