A week without… denim – days six and seven

Smart on Saturday, but cheating on Sunday

And so to the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are pretty hard days to go without jeans. But I have to confess that I might have cheated just a little today…

Saturday’s outfit:

  • Top: Warehouse
  • Skirt: the Gerald Darel one again
  • Tights: Falke

Sunday’s outfit:

  • Pajamas: Lindex

See, I told you that I cheated. On the other hand though, I was very efficient and spent all of Baby O’s mid-morning nap (once he had finally settled down to sleep…) preparing for a big meeting that I have at work tomorrow lunchtime.

I feel much happier that I haven’t left this right up until the absolute last minute (ie Sunday night) as I typically would. Even if this has meant a pajama day for me today.

Well, it has been an interesting and challenging week for me: I’ve managed to cull my wardrobe a little more, discover that cardigans really don’t suit me as I had thought and realised that most of my outfits are black. Now a week without black clothes would really be a hard one to pull off…

A week without… denim – day five

And all my cardigans will be following the first into the charity shop bag. I had not realised that they look scruffy rather than cosy.

I can certainly recommend this experiment to anyone looking to clear out their wardrobe. I have managed to add quite a few items just in the past 24 hours. And I feel sure that dressing without denim at a weekend with a snowstorm blowing outside the door will add a number more.

Today’s outfit:

  • Cardigan: Part Two (shortly to join its cardigan kin in the charity shop bag)
  • T-shirt: H&M
  • Skirt: The same beloved one from H&M that I wore on Wednesday
  • Tights: Wolford

A week without… denim – day four

Well, there is nothing like a photograph to show you how you really look, is there? Now I remember why these trousers were in the charity shop bag and why I had decided to replace this black cardigan.

But this morning I woke with my period and the only thing I wanted to wear was a pair of jeans. So I compromised by wearing, as I thought, slouchy clothes. Turns out they were just old and saggy, but hey-ho, lesson learned.

Today’s outfit:

  • Cardigan: Magasin (Danish department store) at least three or four years ago
  • Vest top: Actually a stretchy maternity top from Mammas & Pappas, but I felt the bloating justified it
  • Trousers: Massimo Dutti (rescued from the charity shop bag and returning there as soon as they’ve washed)

A week without… denim – day three

Two things learned so far this week: yesterday I discovered that it is easier to get yourself quickly into the office for an impromptu meeting while still looking smart if you are not wearing jeans; and today I realised that I wear an awful amount of black (or grey or shades thereof). Exhibit one, picture to the left…

Today’s outfit:

  • Poloneck jumper: Filippa K
  • Skirt: H&M many moons ago – this is my autumn, winter, early spring, mid spring, late spring, early summer, till the sun arrives in Sweden skirt.

A week without… denim – day two

So, day two has been a little disappointing on the wardrobe clear-out front, but perhaps that is because I had a bit of think through what I wanted to wear while I was lying in bed last night. Not planning an outfit in full but a few ideas.

Today’s outfit:

  • Skirt: Gerard Darel (a pre-wedding buy, so I am really pleased to be able to fit into it with lot of some breath-holding.
  • Top: Beaumont Organics
  • Scarf: Massimo Dutti
  • Tights: Sneaky Fox (although they don’t come out in the photo…)

Having thought about it beforehand, it was much easier this morning to dress without resorting to throwing on the jeans and any jumper that I could find to hand.

To help the charity shop bag, I think I might even have a look through my clothes tonight and leave out a few things that I am unsure about, ready to try out tomorrow.

When I was pootling around on the internet looking for inspiration, I found The Uniform Project. The original idea was to raise money while wearing one black dress for a whole year and only wearing it with items already found in your wardrobe, given to you during the course of the year or bought second-hand. What a great idea! Now the UP idea has expanded further with “pilots” doing the same for a month at a time. Very inspiring indeed.

A week without… denim

I am so bored with throwing on one of the same two or three pairs of jeans each day. So I’ve decided to do something about it, starting with a week of not wearing denim. I could have made it really easy for myself and waited until the first week in March to do this, when I return to work and I will wear anything but denim each day, but that would be cheating, wouldn’t it?

(Apologies for bad picture quality!)

So from today and until Sunday, there will be no denim. Every day I’ll post a photo of my outfit, just to prove that I am sticking to my word.

Today’s outfit:

  • Dress: Kookai, a couple of years ago
  • Vest top: H&M
  • Cardigan: Banana Republic

It was actually an interesting experience this morning and has helped to slim down my wardrobe by a further three items. I found one dress that I had used during pregnancy had stretched too much (it wasn’t actually a maternity dress and is knitted, so no real surprises there), a jumper that clung in all the wrong places (into the charity shop bag) and a pair of tights that would not go on, no matter how hard I tried.

I am hoping that day two is as effective in trimming my wardrobe down. It is currently a bad mixture of pre-wedding, pregnancy and post pregnancy random items. Maybe I can even create the holy grail of “the capsule wardrobe”!
