Merry Christmas!

Just popping in here to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas!

We actually celebrated a Swedish/Hungarian Christmas, so our big day was yesterday and, of course, ended with the traditional family game that rapidly descends into argument. Behold, the joy that is Super Mario Chess. (Who knew that a game for two could end up involving five of us…)

So, today is our crashing out in front of the tv and eating leftovers day (and maybe a few bits of chocolate here and there!).

I hope that all your Christmas wishes come true and that Father Christmas/Santa Claus/St Nick/Tomten brings you all that you desire.

Learned this week

This week, I learned that:

  • bending down can earn you a short, sharp kick to the ribs (ouch!)
  • third trimester tiredness will kick in anyway, despite you taking iron supplements
  • baking macarons is challenging but as much fun as I hoped it would be
  • the decision to stop work three weeks before the due date was a good one after all!

Learned this week

  • Even the best sleepers can have their off nights…
  • …and these are exhausting to the previously lucky parents who are used to a good sleeper.
  • Heartburn can strike even when you’ve not been eating.
  • That 33 weeks into a second pregnancy is a good time to stop training at the gym and switch to training only at home.
  • That, according to my midwife, I should have written my birth plan by now and that, according to Baby Centre, I should be packing my hospital bag this week – eek and double eek!
  • Learned this week

    • Toddler tantrums are really quite exhausting…
    • …but that ignoring them (if you can!) might just work
    • Carrying Little O for any length of time longer than 30 seconds is both tiring and painful
    • Scrubbing your nipples while still pregnant is not recommended. I hasten to add that this is not something that I tried this week but a useful tip from Baby Centre. It is not really something that ever crossed my mind to do.
    • Rain showers, a toddler and an infrequent tram service are not a good combination.

    Learned this week

    This week, I learned…

    • Applying nail varnish to your toe nails is challenging at nearly eight months pregnant
    • When a toddler wants to hand you something it may not always be is rarely anything you actually want (especially if his finger has just been near his nose…)
    • That it might be time to stop sharing bathtime with Little O to avoid damage to his future sibling and myself!

    Mash-up for the weekend

Oh, how much do I love this…

And with that I say goodnight…

According to Red Magazine: “Dr Osamu Kuwazuru and his team at Japan’s Fukui University think they have pinpointed the precise moment when the signs of ageing become rapidly more visible: 35.09.”

    English Mamma’s age: 35.4

[heads off to weep into her pillow, quietly hoping that salty tears can keep the ageing process at bay...]

    “So picky”

    Husband: I think he’s done a poo.

    Me: Let’s change him.

Husband: I’m not sure though… It’s not so long since I changed him.

    Me: Have you checked?

Husband: No. [Pause] You smell him.

    Me: I’m eating my porridge.

    Husband: You’re so picky…

[Five minutes later, it was clear to us all that a poo had indeed "been done".]
