Breastfeeding troubles

So here I am back in the same situation as with Little O and struggling with breastfeeding. I know that he’s only ten days old but it’s already becoming an issue. We just cannot get a good latch and have tried a few different positions and techniques but it just doesn’t seem to work.

After we left the hospital on Saturday afternoon, we came home and I carried on the breastfeeding that I’d started in the hospital. The first couple of days went fine, but I realise now that was mainly because, like most newborns, he really wasn’t feeding so much. Day three my milk came in and he responded by going on a bit of a feeding frenzy and it was then that the pain started each time he fed. Monday afternoon we had an appointment to return to the hospital where he was born for a check-up. A doctor checked him over and gave him the all-clear and a nurse checked his latch and said immediately that it was all wrong and that if he carried on that way, I’d get a permanent sore. When we tried him on the other side, she asked me if I had had similar problems when feeding Little O – yes, I had – and she told me that I did indeed have a permanent sore on that side from feeding him.

She showed me how to feed him in a different position and that worked so well while we were there and I was able to use my hands to hold down Baby E’s and she was able to push his head into the right position to latch on. Aaah, breastfeeding without pain – something I’d not experienced before, sadly. However, this just isn’t feasible at home as I need at least three arms to be able to do this hold and get him to latch on successfully. So, back to square one.

I called Amningsmottagningen – the hospital’s breastfeeding clinic – to try and get some help but unfortunately for the first seven days after a baby is born, they are still dealt with by the maternity unit at the hospital. I searched around a bit on the internet, growing increasingly sore and tearful by this stage, and then I found Amningshjälpen – a breastfeeding help service. You call a central number for the area in Sweden where you live and then are put in touch with someone who can talk to you over the phone and discuss the problems that you’re having. A wonderful lady called Elisabeth called me back within the hour, coincidentally just when I was reaching a really low point and was considering pulling out the formula and bottles. She talked me through a few different things and although she could not help me directly with the latch problems over the phone, she just made me feel so much better.

On Friday, the day that Baby E turned six days old, I called Amningsmottagningen back to get us an appointment for this week, so Wednesday we’re heading over to the hospital after dropping Little O off at preschool, and hopefully we can get some more help and some advice on how to get a proper latch. Now that I have seen the Holy Grail of pain-free breastfeeding, I want that. Please.

Photo 366 challenge – week 4

Going to be very brief again, as I’m quickly posting this while Husband has taken Little O to swimming and Baby E sleeps. Thursday and Fridays we had good nights with Baby E going as much as four hours between feeds, but last night we were back at only an hour and a half between. “Oh…”, I thought, “Must be the week one growth spurt.” But this morning, he managed to go three hours between feeds. So it’s back to waking our very sleepy baby every strictly two hours during the day and hoping that that will encourage him back into sleeping longer at night.

This one of the two baby bags that you get given at the hospital – one sponsored mainly by Pampers (this one) and the other mainly by Libero, which is one of the leading brands of nappies here in Sweden.

Some of the flowers that we have received this week. I love the colours of these and love even more how the colours have come out in Instagram (despite the photo being a bit grainy).

Day 25:

Little O at our local playground, cleaning up the snow (he’s inherited Husband’s cleaning obsession, I think!). Perhaps though it bodes well for a career as an Olympic curling champion?

Day 26:

Hmm, I had intended to read these two books last week while Little O was at preschool and I was awaiting our imminent arrival. However, Baby E had other plans, so back to the library these go.

Why? Why? Why? (Apologies for the picture quality but it was taken after the sun had set (ie around 4.30pm – sob!) and I just had to take the shot). They are bright pink bulldog money boxes with diamante collars…

A little bit of Duplo post-modernism from English Mamma and Little O – the chimney was all his own work and he was very proud of it).

Feeling a little bit like this today after the long night last night.

I’m just jumping online quickly to post these photos and then, I promise, that I am heading to bed to catch up on some sleep!

Day 16:

On Monday, it snowed and I managed to grab this from the cafe at the top of Fotografiska – a view over Gamla Stan (The Old Town) in the snow.

Day 18:

After preschool, Little O and I went to Gamla Stan to collect a TENS machine from the midwife. This is one of the side streets on Gamla Stan, the old centre of Stockholm.

Day 19:

Thursday was a day of hard-hitting news: “The most and least popular dog breeds in Stockholm”

Day 20:

At the supermarket Little O got to ride in the special car trolley. He was in his element. Little did we know at this point that the night was to take a very different turn…

Baby E was born at 00.01 on Saturday morning!

An early arrival

Baby E arrived four days early at 00.01 on Saturday morning after a quick dash to the hospital. We brought him home yesterday and introduced him to his very excited big brother.

Week 39 – still hanging in here

How far along?: 39 weeks and 1 day

Total weight gain/loss: Probably around 10 kilos – maybe a little more. What I don’t understand is how this is possible. I will be the first to admit that I have not exactly been eating well in the past few weeks (far too much chocolate and too many sweet things) but I don’t seem to be putting that much weight on. I guess it could be that since I’ve stopped working out, all that lovely heavy muscle I have built up is turning back into fat…

Stretch marks?: Yep, still there and still horribly purplish.

Sleep: Well, that would be nice, but not really happening. During the day I am tired and even just taking Little O to preschool is a struggle, but the moment I switch the light off at night, my brain goes into overdrive, the heartburn/acid reflux kicks in and I am wide awake. None of this is helped by Little O waking two or three times a night and crying out in his sleep. Oh well, just preparing me for the sleeplessness to come, I guess.

Best moment this week: Sitting down with Little O and the three new books that we’ve bought him about the arrival of a baby. Since then he’s picked up the books again and again (mostly to point out the pages with “Cars!” on them), but I am still glad I bought them and that we’ve had some time to read through them and for me to ask him if he minds that we’ll soon have a little baby living with us. Not sure how much he really understands, but I guess it’s just good to talk to him about it as much as we can.

Worst moment this week: The nights without proper sleep…

Movement: Some days it all seems a bit quieter in there and I wonder “Is this it? Could today be the day?” (as I seem to remember Little O stopped moving so much in the days immediately before he was born), and other days, like yesterday, the kicking and squirming is very apparent.

Belly button in or out?: Still out, still horrid…

What I miss: Being able to get around without losing my breath and feeling exhausted. (Ha! Well, I guess that exhaustion of a different kind is heading my way, so I’d better just bite the bullet.)

What I am looking forward to: Tomorrow evening when three mamma friends come over here with takeaway for our regular girls’ night out (or in, in this case).

Milestones: Well, I think I was having some contractions yesterday evening, so I guess we’re heading into the final, final stages now. They stopped overnight though, so I think they might have been just caused by me doing too much walking and too much carrying of Little O yesterday afternoon. But still, a sign that we’re getting very close now.

Learned this week

This week, I learned that…

  • peanut butter gives me terrible, terrible heartburn…
  • …and the following day, that pretty much any food these days gives me terrible heartburn
  • trying to exhaust yourself so that I can sleep well at night just doesn’t work this late in pregnancy (you would have thought I’d have learnt that the first time around, but no…)
  • being breathless all the time is no fun (hmmm, yet another thing I should have remembered from last time?)
  • I can finally get my hospital bag packed!
