Learned this week

  • Even the best sleepers can have their off nights…
  • …and these are exhausting to the previously lucky parents who are used to a good sleeper.
  • Heartburn can strike even when you’ve not been eating.
  • That 33 weeks into a second pregnancy is a good time to stop training at the gym and switch to training only at home.
  • That, according to my midwife, I should have written my birth plan by now and that, according to Baby Centre, I should be packing my hospital bag this week – eek and double eek!
  • Kicking out Klout

There has been a lot of talk about Klout on blogs and on Twitter in the past month or so. I am not really up on exactly how Klout works but it seems that they changed something with their algorithms and that is the issue (maybe? I’m not really sure as I have to admit that I don’t totally understand how an algorithm works…).

Anyhoo, then I was flicking through my zite pages (for those of you with an iPad, zite is a cool app that offers you blog posts and stories from the web on topics that might interest you) and I read this article about why Klout is not a good thing. I usually don’t bother getting panicky about these type of articles as I find them a bit shouty and the headline of this one very nearly put me off as I think it’s particularly bossy but I actually ended up unsubscribing, leaving and deleting my Klout account after reading it.

I’m not suggesting that everyone should leave Klout, but I did think that the article brought up some very interesting points, especially about privacy (although maybe this ends up being a bit like those posts that go around on Facebook, getting everyone’s knickers in a twist about privacy that then turn out not to be true). And then I read this post from Nickie at Typecast, which pretty much confirmed that I’ve made the right decision.

What do you think about Klout? Do you use it?

    Learned this week

    • Toddler tantrums are really quite exhausting…
    • …but that ignoring them (if you can!) might just work
    • Carrying Little O for any length of time longer than 30 seconds is both tiring and painful
    • Scrubbing your nipples while still pregnant is not recommended. I hasten to add that this is not something that I tried this week but a useful tip from Baby Centre. It is not really something that ever crossed my mind to do.
    • Rain showers, a toddler and an infrequent tram service are not a good combination.
